Philodendrons are a popular family of over 400 plant species that are grown as indoor houseplants and outdoor container plants. They come in various colors, sizes, and shapes. They are known for being the easiest to grow and the hardest to kill, making them a favorite of gardening enthusiasts. The Philodendron Brandtianum is a particular type of Philodendron that is easy to grow and suitable for warm, non-freezing climates.

Light

The Philodendron Brandtianum plant thrives in bright, indirect light, usually between 10,000 to 20,000 lux. This replicates its natural habitat under the filtered sunlight of the rainforest canopy. While it can tolerate moderate or filtered light and semi-shady areas, direct and intense sunlight should be avoided to prevent leaf scorching. Placing the plant near a north-facing or east-facing window is best to ensure it receives ample but diffused light.

Water

Watering your Philodendron Brandtianum should be done thoughtfully to ensure its healthy growth. It is recommended to allow the soil to dry out slightly between waterings, with the top 2-3 inches of soil drying out before rewatering. During summer, when temperatures are warmer, and growth is faster, you may need to water your plant around three times a week. However, during winter or colder days, you can reduce the frequency of watering to only once a week. When you water your plant, be careful not to wet the leaves, as moisture sitting on leaves can help bacteria grow and spread. Additionally, if you use tap water, it’s best to let it sit out for a day before using it, as the fluoride and chlorine in treated water can damage your Philodendron Brandtianum. Treated water can harm your plant.

Soil

It is important to use a potting mix that has good drainage properties. The soil should hold enough moisture to keep the plant hydrated and allow water to drain easily to prevent waterlogging and root rot. A mix that contains a good amount of organic matter, such as peat moss or coco coir, will provide the necessary nutrients and aeration for healthy root growth. The optimal pH level for soil used for Silver Leaf Philodendron is mildly acidic to neutral, ranging from 6.1 to 7.3. This plant can actually grow well in 100% peat moss or a mixture of peat moss and perlite in equal quantities.

Temperature

The Philodendron Brandtianum plant thrives best in a warm environment with a temperature range of 60-75°F (15-24°C). Although it can tolerate temperatures between 50-95°F (10-35°C), it is sensitive to cold drafts and frost. To prevent temperature stress, it is essential to keep it away from sources of cold drafts, such as air conditioning vents or drafty windows.

Humidity

Ideal humidity levels for this tropical plant range from 60% to as high as 95%. Although it can adjust to average household humidity levels, providing a more humid environment will promote faster and more robust growth and larger, more vibrant foliage. You can increase humidity by using a humidifier, misting the plant, or placing it on a tray filled with water and pebbles.

Fertilizer

Philodendron Brandtianum is a plant that doesn’t require much feeding, but using a fertilizer can help it grow larger and healthier leaves. During its active growing season, which is usually every four to six weeks, you should fertilize it with a balanced, diluted liquid fertilizer. To avoid damaging the roots, you should dilute the fertilizer to about a quarter of the strength recommended on the package. If you want even better foliage, use a product with a fertilizer ratio of 15-5-10, as nitrogen promotes leaf growth. It’s important always to use a high-quality fertilizer, as cheap fertilizers with heavy salts can harm the roots and even kill the plant.

Growth Rate

Philodendron Brandtianum can grow up to six to eight inches in height and four to seven inches in spread when cultivated indoors. The plant’s size, including the size of its leaves, depends on the quality of care it receives, such as the amount of light it gets, the type of soil used, and the temperature. For optimal growth, placing the plant in a north-facing or east-facing window is recommended.

Pet Safety

It is important to keep in mind that Philodendron Brandtianum is toxic to pets and can cause health issues if ingested. Therefore, it should be kept in a place that is out of reach of curious pets.

Grow in Semi-Hydro

  • Philodendrons, celebrated for their lush foliage and adaptability, thrive in semi-hydroponic systems such as LECA/Pon, thanks to their resilient root systems and preference for consistent moisture.
  • Shifting a Philodendron to a semi-hydroponic setting works well using a Nutrient Stagnant Wicking (NSW) method, providing a stable and effective environment for growth.
  • Within the LECA/Pon environment, Philodendron roots adapt swiftly, effectively managing any early challenges in adapting to the NSW system.
  • For nourishing Philodendrons in semi-hydro systems, a nutrient solution with a concentration around 800-1000ppm is optimal.
  • Philodendrons are versatile in adapting to a range of temperature and humidity levels, making them ideal for various indoor settings.
  • Regular care involves keeping an eye on the water level in the reservoir and periodically flushing the system to ensure the Philodendron’s healthy and consistent growth.
  • If your Philodendron is a climber, it’s a must to look at our Moss Pole guide to have a proper set-up.

Tips

  • Be vigilant about root health: Ensure good soil drainage and avoid letting the plant sit in water.
  • Rotate the plant periodically to promote balanced growth and prevent the plant from leaning towards the light source.
  • Regularly inspect for pests like spider mites and mealybugs. Treat any infestations immediately to prevent spread and damage.
  • Protect the plant from cold temperatures and drafts, as these can be harmful and stunt growth.
  • Pruning is important for maintaining the plant’s shape and health. Regularly remove any yellowing or damaged leaves to encourage new growth and maintain the plant’s aesthetic appeal.

To maintain the lush and silvery mottled beauty of Philodendron Brandtianum, it is important to follow these detailed care guidelines. Consistent care tailored to the specific needs of this plant will ensure that it remains a vibrant and healthy addition to your indoor plant collection. So, take good care of this plant to enjoy its beauty in your home or office.

Happy planting! 🌱
