Philodendrons are easy to care for and come in many types, making them a favorite among houseplant collectors. The Philodendron Mamei is a rare beauty with large heart-shaped, variegated foliage featuring silver streaks and deep veins. Light

Philodendron Mamei is a plant that naturally grows on the floors of rainforests where it receives dappled sunlight. If you want to grow it indoors and mimic its natural habitat, keeping it in a spot with bright, indirect sunlight is best. The plant’s silver variegation means it can tolerate lower light levels, but insufficient light can lead to stunted growth and smaller leaves. Direct sunlight can damage the delicate leaves of the plant; therefore, it is best to place it near an east-facing window or in a bright room with filtered light through sheer curtains.

Water

The Philodendron Mamei plant requires moderate moisture levels to thrive. Watering it only when the top 2 inches of soil feel almost dry is crucial to prevent root rot. Ensure the soil drains well and avoid letting the plant sit in water. The frequency of watering may vary depending on the environment and season. You can water it once or twice a week in summer, but be careful not to overwater it. It’s best to water it sparingly in winter, use a humidifier, or place the plant in a bathroom to create a steamy environment.

Soil

To ensure your plants grow optimally, it is essential to use a potting mix that is well-draining and airy. You can prepare this mixture by combining two parts of potting soil, one part of perlite and one part of coconut husks. If you are growing Philodendron Mamei outdoors, adding sand to the mixture can improve its drainage. For the Mamei plant, the ideal soil pH level ranges from 5.6 to 7.5, which is slightly acidic to slightly alkaline. This pH level helps maintain the plant’s health and promotes vibrant growth and foliage development. Avoid using garden soil as it may not provide enough drainage and may contain pests and diseases that can harm your plants.

Tip: For the natural draining of excess water, use a raised spot like a tree mound to grow Philodendron Mamei.

Temperature

Philodendron Mamei thrives in a temperature range of 65°F to 80°F (18°C – 27°C). It’s not a fan of cold weather and should be kept away from temperatures below 55°F. The temperature range required by this plant is usually found in comfortable indoor environments, which makes it a great choice for a houseplant.

Humidity

For this tropical plant to thrive, it needs to be kept in a humid environment, ideally above 60%. To maintain the proper humidity levels, use humidifiers or place the plant on a tray of pebbles filled with water, especially during dry months. Additionally, misting the plant occasionally can be beneficial. However, it can still tolerate lower humidity levels, but the best growth and foliage development can be achieved at 60% humidity and above.

Fertilizer

It’s recommended to fertilize your Silver Cloud plants every 4-6 weeks during the spring and summer seasons using a liquid-balanced organic fertilizer. You should opt for a diluted slow-release or water-soluble formula or try a gentle organic option such as fish emulsion. Alternatively, you can use a slow-release fertilizer every 3-6 months. It’s important to follow the recommended dilution and frequency to avoid over-fertilization, which can ultimately harm the plant. Silver Cloud plants thrive in soil that is rich in organic manure. You can increase microbial activity by using vermicasts and biochar. Furthermore, it’s best to avoid cheap fertilizers as they can harm your Mamei plants in the long run. Excessive fertilizer use can cause leaf curling and shedding, so it’s crucial to apply the fertilizer in moderation.

Growth Rate

The Philodendron Mamei is a plant that grows at a moderate pace. It can either crawl on the ground or climb upwards with the help of a moss pole. Under favorable conditions, it can reach a height of up to 3.2 feet and cover a substantial outdoor area. To promote bushiness and obtain cuttings for propagation, tip pruning is recommended.

Pet Safety

Philodendron Mamei is toxic to pets due to calcium oxalate crystals. Keep away from pets.

Grow in Semi-Hydro

  • Philodendrons, celebrated for their lush foliage and adaptability, thrive in semi-hydroponic systems such as LECA/Pon, thanks to their resilient root systems and preference for consistent moisture.
  • Shifting a Philodendron to a semi-hydroponic setting works well using a Nutrient Stagnant Wicking (NSW) method, providing a stable and effective environment for growth.
  • Within the LECA/Pon environment, Philodendron roots adapt swiftly, effectively managing any early challenges in adapting to the NSW system.
  • For nourishing Philodendrons in semi-hydro systems, a nutrient solution with a concentration around 800-1000ppm is optimal.
  • Philodendrons are versatile in adapting to a range of temperature and humidity levels, making them ideal for various indoor settings.
  • Regular care involves keeping an eye on the water level in the reservoir and periodically flushing the system to ensure the Philodendron’s healthy and consistent growth.
  • If your Philodendron is a climber, it’s a must to look at our Moss Pole guide to have a proper set-up.

Tips

  • Maintain an even soil moisture level, especially during growing months.
  • Regularly clean the leaves to prevent dust accumulation and pest infestations.
  • Prune as needed to control growth and remove dead or diseased foliage.
  • Repot every 2-3 years in a slightly larger pot.
  • In winter, reduce watering but ensure the plant doesn’t dry out completely.
  • Provide adequate humidity for lush growth and shiny foliage.
  • Be mindful of temperature changes and acclimatize the plant when moving it indoors or outdoors
